Google algorithm changes – what designers should know

Google making changes to its algorithm is certainly nothing new Matt Cutts has been giving interviews about the search giant’s battles with web spammers for years. What is new, however, is the search giant’s increasing focus on mobile devices and the experience that the websites it sends its users to deliver on smaller screens. Even more importantly, it’s now rolling out some of the algorithms that it has build for mobile devices over the last decade or so to its desktop search results. The result of this is that if you don’t design websites with the mobile user’s experience in mind, your Google ranking is going to be suffering very soon.

To avoid this, you need to make sure that your website design is responsive. This is the technical term for a type of design that looks just as lovely on a small iPhone screen as it does on a desktop computer or even a tablet. Having a separate mobile version of your website simply won’t cut the mustard anymore. To keep Google (and the rest of the internet) happy, you’ll need to go for a responsive design. Thankfully, the rest of the internet has now moved towards the same direction, so you should have no trouble in finding a company that is able and willing to provide a responsive website for you that fits within your brand guidelines.

The move towards responsiveness is a great example of why website owners should keep a close eye on Google and what it is doing. If you don’t pay sufficient attention, you run the risk of missing these types of changes and seeing your website and its ranking (and the traffic that you get from search engines) suffering as a result. Make the right choices early on and everything will be far easier.
